NSFAS (National Student Finacial Aid Scheme)

NSFAS provides financial aid to disadvantaged students from the poor and working-class who meet eligibility criteria to study at public universities or TVET colleges.

Who qualifies for funding?

You qualify for a NSFAS bursary if you are a South African citizen who plans to study in 2024 or you are already studying at a public university or TVET college and you meet the following requirements:

  • South African citizens or permanent residents
  • SASSA grant recipients
  • Applicants whose combined gross household income is not more than R350 000 per year
  • Persons with disabilities whose combined gross household income is not more than R600 000 per year
  • Must have email account and cell phone number
Once your funding application becomes successful, NSFAS will cover your costs for:
  • Accommodation
  • Living allowance
  • Learning material allowance
  • Personal care allowance

The Funza Lushaka Bursary Scheme

NSFAS provides financial aid to disadvantaged students from the poor and working-class who meet eligibility criteria to study at public universities or TVET colleges.

Who qualifies for funding?

All first time applicants must be 30 years or younger to apply for Funza Lushaka Bursary

  • Be a South African citizen with a valid ID number
  • Be 30 years old or younger
  • Have no other teaching qualifications
  • Have good academic ability and an exemption, endorsement, or admission to bachelor degree studies pass at matric/Grade 12 level
  • Be accepted into an approved B.Ed. degree or PGCE programme to specialise in two or more of the priority subject areas
  • Be committed to and enthusiastic about a professional teaching career
The Funza Lushaka bursary covers almost all student expenses. At times, a few expenses are left out depending on the institution's fee structure. How much is the Funza Lushaka monthly allowance for 2023? The fund is disbursed annually and not on a monthly basis. The annual amount for the 2022 academic year was about R113,750 for each successful applicant. Here is a look at the items covered under the bursary.
  • Tuition fees
  • Accommodation costs (for either residence or approved accommodation)
  • A Small monthly allowance to cater for basic living expenses
  • In exceptional circumstances, travelling costs may be included if the cost of travelling hinders the student from accepting the bursary
How to apply?:
  • Open the e-Gov portal at www.eservices.gov.za "Click here to apply"
  • Register by providing personal information
  • Login to the system using user name and password created when registering
  • On the e-Services Menu select Funza Lushaka Bursary Scheme
  • Enter the OTP received on the preferred channel
  • Accept the Terms and Conditions
  • On the dashboard menu click on the 2024 application button
  • Follow the steps to complete the required field with your information
  • Accept the declaration to confirm the information captured
